THE ARTIST

Artist Introduction

"Artist Emily Anderson"

Photographer: Bailey Vanduinen

Hello. My name is Emily Anderson, and I am a Grade 12 student at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School. I created this blog site for my Communications Technology course as an electronic portfolio. My com tech teacher is Mr. John Esford. I have taken Grades 10 and 11 com tech.  Some of the major projects we have completed in Grade 12 com tech are a short narrative movie, a digital photo art poster, and a logo design.

I am interested in almost every field of com tech, but my absoulute favourite is photography. This is because I believe a picture speaks a thousand words, and I love capturing a moment in a photo.  My favourite project throughout my three years of com tech was the magazine ad reproduction. This is because I got the chance to replicate the work of one of my favourite artists, Taylor Swift. Another sector of com tech I love is audio, and my favourite album is Selena Gomez' "Revival." After high school, I would like to expand my communications technology knowledge by attending Ryerson's program "Graphic Communications Management."

"Taylor Swift"

Photography by Emily Anderson

This is a photo I took of Taylor Swift at her 1989 World Tour. This was taken on October 1, 2015 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario. It was taken when Taylor was singing the song "Out of the Woods." I took this photo using my personal camera, the Samsung Galaxy SF2 Camera. The most challenging part about taking this photo was to have my camera adjusted to the right settings, as the lighting in the arena changes dramatically over the course of the show and within each song performance.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Video Intro

"EA Photography"

Intro by Emily Anderson

This is the video introduction I produced for EA Photography. I used many different software programs on my iMac to create this. The background was created in motion and the music and sound effects were produced in Soundtrack Pro v7. My logo was designed in Adobe Illustrator CS3. I edited all of these components together using Final Cut Pro.

Narrative Video

"Better Get This on Tape"

Short Narrative Movie by Emily Anderson, Shannon Anderson, and Bailey Vanduinen

This is a short narrative movie I produced with my classmates, Shannon Anderson and Bailey Vanduinen. My contribution to the film was all the cinematography and graphics. "Better Get this on Tape" is a thriller about an anonymous killer who becomes friends with various girls, then becomes murderous. I filmed this movie using a Panasonic AVCCAM 3 CCD video camera, and edited on Final Cut Pro. This film will be screened in the "Youth Shorts" category at the Kingston Film Festival on Saturday, Feburary 27, 2015.

This is a highlights video of Holy Cross Secondary School's band concert in December 2015. The band includes many students from Holy Cross playing a variety of instruments. I filmed this using the Canon VIXIA HF S100 video camera. It was edited on an iMac using Final Cut Pro v7. The most challenging part of this assignment was to be in the right place at the right time, to capture as many highlights as possible.

TV Commercial Reproduction

"Doritos Manchild"

Commercial Reproduction by Emily Anderson, Bailey Vanduinen, Kailyn Germain and Liz Petingal

This is a commercial reproduction of the "Dorito's Manchild" commercial I produced in spring, 2015. This video starts with the original commercial, followed by my recreation. Photojournalism

"Jazz Band Concert 2015"

Photojournalism by Emily Anderson

I took this photo at the Holy Cross Jazz Band lunchtime concert in December 2015. I used a Nikon D7000 DSLR camera with a Nikkor 80-200 mm 1:2.8 D lens. I edited the image in Adobe Photoshop CS3. The biggest challenge in taking a photo at a live concert was being in the right spot at the right time, and having the correct focus and exporsure. My biggest achievement was having my work displayed on the school's website.

Publicity Head Shot

"Bailey Vanduinen Publicity Head Shot"

Photography by Emily Anderson

I photographed this publicity headshot of model Bailey Vanduinen. I took this photo using the Nikon D7000 DSLR camera with a Nokkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G || lens. To create Rembrandt lighting, I used a Camray Aurora Light bank studio flash unit with a soft box. To edit this photo I used an iMac device with Adobe Photoshop CS3. I added a black and white filter on Photoshop to create a classic Hollywood vibe.

Training Exercises

  "Shutter Speed"

Photography by Emily Anderson

To broaden our knowledge of photography skills, in Grade 12 com tech we completed a variety of photo exercises. This included composition, natural lighting, shutter speed, and depth of field exercises. The shutter speed exercise included taking one photo with incorrect shutter speed, and one with correct shutter speed. The most challenging obstacle to overcome about this project was to find the correct fast shutter speed to capture the moment. To take this photo, I used a Nikon D7000 DSLR camera, and edited it on an iMac using Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Album Redesign

"Hilary Duff Metamorphosis"

Album Redesign by Emily Anderson

This is the album redesign I created for Hilary Duff's album "Metamorphosis" in Grade 11 Communication Technology. The original album was released in 2003, so I was up for the challenge of  making an updated album cover. To express "Metamorphosis," I included half of the model's face with no makeup, her hair up, and in black and white. On the other side, is the opposite side of a person, with her hair down, smiling and tons of bright colours. This is to portray "metamorphosis" within a person. To take these photos, I used a Nikon D7000 camera with a Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G || lens. I then edited the images on an iMac using the Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Movie Poster

"Better Get This on Tape Movie Poster"

Photography by Emily Anderson

This is the movie poster I created for the short movie I filmed in Grade 12 communications technology class. The movie is called, "Better Get this on Tape." To capture the theme of suspense in the film, I edited out the face of the unknown murderer. To edit the image I took, I used Photoshop CS3 on an iMac. I took this picture with a  Nikon D7000 DSLR camera with a Nokkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G || lens. My greatest achievement on this assignment was creating a powerful visual element to represent, and create interest in the film.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Digital Photo Art

"Look Within"

Digital Photo Art by Emily Anderson

This is my digital photo art project, which I photographed and edited. I used a Camray studio flash unit with a soft box for professional lighting. I took the photo using a Nikon D7000 DSLR camera with a Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5 1-5.6 G || lens. The image I photographed was manipulated on an iMac using photoshop CS3. The best part about his assignment was having my digital photo art poster displayed in the Holy Cross Secondary School art show on the theme, "The Chaotic Harmony of my Divergent Self."

Logo Design

"EA Photography Logo"

Graphic Design by Emily Anderson

This is the logo design project for my company, EA photography. I created this logo using a Mac, and Adobe Illustrator. From this project, I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator, overcoming new elements such as anchor points, layers, etc.  As part of the the design process,  I researched company logos, completed five pencil sketches, and a prototype. The best part of this assignment was the process of creating my own company logo by determining how to best express myself and my skills.

Logo Design Process

"EA Photography Logo 5 Pencil Sketches"

Original Artwork by Emily Anderson

This is the design process for creating the logo for EA photography. These are five pencil sketches I created before narrowing down and accomplishing the final product. I wanted to achieve a logo that incorporated my initials, and included an easily recognized symbol of photography. The main skill I learned during this project was the trial and error process used to finalize my logo by incorporating a couple of the five sketches. My biggest achievement was learning the creative process involved in successfully creating a logo for my very own company

Magazine Ad Reproduction

"Magazine Ad Reproduction (Original and Redesign)"

Graphic Design by Emily Anderson

This is the magazine ad reproduction I completed in Grade 11. The original ad is for Taylor Swift's Perfume, "Incredible Things." I reproduced this ad by finding a model whose appearance is similar to Taylor Swift's, photographing her in the same pose, and editing on Adobe Photoshop CS3. I took the picture with a Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5 1-5.6 G || lens, then manipulated it on an iMac. My greatest achievement during this assignment was successfully reproducing all elements of the original ad.

Movie Poster Reproduction

"Vampire Academy Movie Reproduction"
Graphic Design by Emily Anderson

This is a movie poster reproduction I created in Grade 10 for the movie, Vampire Academy. I took this photo using a Nikon D7000 DSLR camera with a Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G || lens. The image I photographed was manipulated on an iMac, using Adobe Photoshop CS3. One skill I learned during this assignment was how to work with layers on photoshop, as this was my first exposure to this element. I believe my best achievement on this project was successfully learning how to use Photoshop and reproducing a strong, powerful movie poster.
